In teaching writing, I have found that one of the most vital elements I can employ to help students understand and identify the characteristics of excellent prose is introducing them to great writers, and having them read and analyze those writers’ styles and methods. In addition, my syllabus mixes classic authors, such as Hemingway, with more contemporary writers, such as music critics and magazine writers, helping students understand that the English language is a ceaselessly fascinating tool, changing and adapting to our different moods and moments in time.
