Academic Advisement
From the outset of a student’s college career, advising is an essential part of his or her undergraduate experience. During the freshman year, each Liberal Studies student is assigned a faculty advisor. Students meet with their advisors to discuss academic and professional objectives and techniques for succeeding in college. First-year students are encouraged to meet with their advisors regularly. After freshman year, students are advised by full-time Academic Advisors. Because majors are officially declared at the beginning of the junior year, students are expected to spend time during their first two years of college preparing for their eventual choice of a major and perhaps a minor. Advisors can assist students with questions about other NYU colleges and can sometimes provide a “road map” for students by suggesting where to go next or to whom a student should speak about a particular area of interest or academic department. Together, Liberal Studies students and advisors establish useful working relationships that foster academic excellence and personal growth.
Enrollment After Liberal Studies
All sophomores in Liberal Studies should be gathering information about the school in which they plan to enroll the end of the sophomore year. At the end of the sophomore year, students who have successfully completed their Liberal Studies requirements enroll as juniors in the NYU college to which they have been guaranteed admission when they were accepted to NYU as freshmen. Students leave Liberal Studies with at least 64 credits, half of the 128 credits necessary for a bachelor’s degree. They leave Liberal Studies with an excellent liberal arts education and enhanced learning skills that serve them well as they take the next step toward their bachelor’s degrees.
Choosing Electives
During the freshman year, students take most of their courses in Liberal Studies, but during the sophomore year, students combine required courses with elective courses taken at another NYU school or college. With assistance from their advisors, sophomores select their electives with a view toward the future. For example, students who plan to major in English or politics or another area at the College of Arts and Science are encouraged to sample courses in those departments during their sophomore year. Likewise, students who will enroll in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, the Silver School of Social Work, or the Gallatin School of Individualized Study are encouraged to sample introductory courses leading to the eventual major or concentration in those schools that the student has in mind.
