Liberal Studies Honors
Liberal Studies Dean’s Circle
The Liberal Studies Dean’s Circle is the sophomore honor society. The Dean’s Circle participates in the various activities of the University’s Scholars Programs. At the end of the freshman year, students who have completed the year with a GPA of 3.65 or better are invited to apply. Membership selection is based on scholarship, leadership, and community service. As members, students receive an award from the University to participate in cultural events in New York and travel abroad together. In recent semesters, the Dean’s Circle attended plays, concerts, and special faculty lectures and traveled to the Czech Republic, Germany, England, Spain, Turkey, Cuba, and Brazil.
Dean’s List
At the end of each academic year, a Dean's Honors List is compiled. This is an honors roll of matriculated students who have achieved an average of 3.650 or higher for that academic year (September-May) in at least 28 graded points. In order to be listed, a student must not have any grades of Incomplete or N at the time when the list is compiled. Note that grade point averages are not rounded off.
The Wallace Goebetz Memorial Prize
The Goebetz Prize, founded in memory of NYU Professor Wallace Goebetz, is awarded annually to the Liberal Studies sophomore with the highest overall GPA. The honoree receives a certificate and a monetary award.
The Elaine Kuntz Memorial Writing Prize
Established by the family of the late Dr. Elaine Kuntz, Liberal Studies first associate director and a writing professor, the Kuntz Prize is presented to the sophomore with the best essay composed in a writing course. The award recipient receives a certificate and a monetary award.
Michael Probst Scholarships
Sophomores with outstanding academic records are eligible to apply for eight $2,000 merit awards. The Probst Scholarships are highly competitive and non-renewable.
