News and Notes
Recently, the General Studies Program community held a
retirement party for long-time GSP Dean Stephen Curry at the NYU Torch Club.
Friends, faculty and alumni gathered to honor Steve’s 26
years of tireless work and dedication to the program. According to current GSP
Dean Fred Schwarzbach: “under Steve's leadership, a small, ‘second-chance’
program in a nearly-forgotten corner of the School of Continuing and
Professional Studies became one of the University's flagship undergraduate
programs and a vital part of Arts and
Science. Steve also played a lead role
in establishing both the Florence campus and GSP
Florence, the successful models for our new international programs in London and Paris.
Our collective debt to him is incalculable.”
Steve’s remarks were brief as he thanked everyone in
attendance for what they have done for the program.
Steve left it to others to put his legacy into context. On
behalf of the 11,000 GSP alumni around the globe, GSP Alumni Association
President Geoffrey Raicht (GSP ’88,
CAS ’90, WAG ’92) said: “with the academic foundation provided by GSP to so
many students under your stewardship, we are well prepared for the challenges
that await us. Thank you Dean Curry.”
A scholarship has
been created in Dean Curry’s name and the program hopes to award financial aid
to the first “Curry Scholar” in the fall of 2008. To make a contribution to the
scholarship fund, or to find out more about the GSP Alumni Association, please

GSP Freshman Leaves Broadway for NYU by Christine Giardina for the Washington Square News "After graduating high school, GSP freshman Gideon Glick wasn't getting
ready for college. Instead, at the ripe age of 17, he was cast as the
innocent young boy, Ernst, in the hit Broadway musical "Spring
Awakening."
But a year later, Glick, who was originally accepted into NYU's class
of 2010, decided to quit the show and go back to school. He is the
first member of the original cast to leave the show." read more...
Students may apply directly to GSP by Nausheen Husain for the Washington Square News
"NYU is considering changing the General Studies Program so students can directly apply to it, according to GSP dean Fred Schwarzbach. No changes have been made yet, but most of the faculty and administration believe it would benefit students who want a strong liberal arts education, he said. "Students, alumni and parents have been asking us about a direct application for a long time," Schwarzbach said."" read more...
